Renewable Energy

TUV NEL has been at the forefront of the development and testing of renewable energy technologies, has operated a wind turbine test site for over 20 years and manages Scotland's Energy Technology Centre.

The experience we have gained in operating this renewable energy centre has provided us with considerable insight into this developing sector and we can truly claim to offer a unique "hands-on" consultancy service to our clients.
Our service aims to provide support to utility providers, wind farm operators and manufacturers - often through the establishment of joint industry projects which minimise the costs for all parties involved. Additionally, we are able to advise local authorities on the suitability of any turbine installation from a health & safety and environmental perspective.
Our traditional engineering background, coupled with our practical experience, allows us to provide an in-depth consultancy service in the following areas:
  • Technical due diligence
  • Site layout
  • Environmental impact
  • Blade design
  • Structural analysis
  • Vibration and audible noise characterisation
  • Wind resource assessment
  • Project viability
Beyond wind energy, we have a wealth of experience in other small and large scale renewable energy systems. These include wave, tidal and hydro power, fuel cell systems, bio-energy, micro CHP and solar thermal energy.
