The work carried out by NEL and its partner organisations creates impact in a wide variety of forms. These are captured and measured under the following topic areas:
Innovation
Beneficial changes in terms of efficiency and effectiveness to existing or new processes
Significance
Political or social benefits, quality of life, safety, etc.
Financial
Financial benefit accruing from outputs, probably over several stakeholders/groups
Capacity Building
Benefits to on-going infrastructure improvements or knowledge exchanges
Collaboration and Partnership
Reciprocity in relationships, potential for shared funding and/or risk
It is vital that any work carried out provides value for the customer. While it is possible to measure this in terms of inputs and outputs, the real value comes from measuring outcomes. Outcomes can also be described as the impact which the work has achieved.
The Knowledge Transfer activities at NEL ensure that impact measurement is carried out throughout the life of every project. While most customers already recognise the importance of their work, impact measurement has other advantages for the customer. It allows them to see the supplementary benefits of their work, to help specify future projects and to secure funding for essential work.
