Within the UK's National Measurement System, NEL is responsible for the technical area of flow measurement. This involves a major programme of research, development and knowledge dissemination concerning leading edge flow measurement challenges. The programme helps to provide industry with the support necessary to measure challenging flows in many sectors and engineering disciplines.

Flow Facilities
As well as knowledge and expertise, we have the flow measurement facilities which comprise the UK's National Standards. These unique facilities provide a superb platform for research and development work in all areas of flow measurement.

Complex Fluids
In the recent past the research has provided major support to the introduction of new technologies such as multiphase flow meters and wet gas metering. Research has also supported the extended use of traditional measurement techiques like orifice plates.

Current Research and Development themes include:

the measurement of high viscosity fluids or heavy oil;
the measurement of cryogenic flow;
the characterisation of complex fluid flows such as multiphase and wet gas flows
the measurement of CO₂ as it relates to carbon capture and storage (CCS)
flare and fuel gas measurement
pipe flow calculations
the use of non-invasive (clamp-on) ultrasonic flow meter
