Research and Development: Low Carbon Technologies

CO2. Low carbon technologies, Small Scale Wind Turbines and Energy Storage from TUV NEL.Through our research and development capability, we have made significant contributions to the development of renewable energy technology

These have included the development and testing of large scale hydroelectric generator equipment, pioneering research into wave and tidal power systems.

Energy Storage
Recognising the significant impact that large scale electrical energy storage could have on the UK grid, NEL recently commissioned a study of candidate energy storage technologies which could be implemented at the National Wind Energy Centre wind turbine test site.

It is planned to establish an energy storage development and demonstration facility at this site to explore novel strategies for energy storage in conjunction with wind power in an 11 kV test environment.  Discussions with potential technology suppliers are under way and expressions of interest for participation in a national consortium project from both system developers and end users are invited.  Please click here if you wish to express your interest in participating in this energy storage project.

In parallel with this, NEL also recently completed a collaborative project on thermal energy storage, aimed primarily at improved thermal management in buildings.  The capability to store thermal energy even for limited periods and release it when demand rises can produce significant improvements in energy utilisation.

Energy Technology Centre
NEL manages Scottish Enterprise's Energy Technology Centre - a specialist facility that provides support and technical resources intended to realise the commercial potential of new energy related products and technologies.

Wind Turbine Test Site

Myres Hill wind turbine test site allows NEL to investigate for clients issues around performance verification, testing and development.  NEL also provides wind tunnel access to accelerate the process.

Fuel Cell Systems
Fuel cell modelling and technical support is used to assist the development of fuel cells and fuel cell systems.  Areas of specialism include thermal and fluid flow issues.

Low Carbon Energy
Our capability can be accessed to support the development of renewable energy systems including large and small scale wind turbines; marine power systems; alternative fuels including biomass and hydrogen; and fuel cell systems.
