Renewable Power Systems

Renewable power systems. TUV NEL works with companies within the UK and globally on low carbon technologies, renewable biomass and tidal power generation.Working with clients to help develop low carbon and alternative energy technology within the UK and globally is an integral part of TUV NEL’s engineering services portfolio.

TUV NEL offers unique facilities and expertise for product test and developing:

Carbon Capture and Storage
The measurement challenges associated with the accurate monitoring of carbon dioxide flow and physical properties for different CCS applications can be investigated using TUV NEL facilities and expertise.

Alternative Fuels and Biomass
On-site test facilities can be configured to accommodate a wide range of systems and devices using alternative fuel sources.  TUV NEL has the specialist capability to assess alternative fuels (including biomass and hydrogen) for heat, power generation and transport applications.

Wind
The Myres Hill wind turbine test site offers high average wind speeds and complex terrain.  The site has grid connections and can accommodate significant generated power levels.  The site is available for measurement and testing of wind turbines.

Marine
Simulated operation of tidal power systems using hydraulic actuators for performance assessment and durability testing. Pumped flow circuits for testing of model tidal and hydro turbines.

Fuel Cell Systems
Fuel cell modelling and technical support is used to assist the development of fuel cells and fuel cell systems.  Areas of specialism include thermal and fluid flow issues.

Micro CHP
TUV NEL provides development and testing of mechanical, thermodynamic and electrical aspects of micro CHP (combined heat and power) systems.

Sustainable Transport
Assessment and development of novel powertrain solutions, including hybrid and electric drives for sustainable transport. A chassis dynamometer is available to support vehicle-based development programmes while dynamometers can be used for drivetrain development work.
